Navigating the Fog

If you’re an avid outdoor enthusiast, you’ve likely hiked in the fog. Everything is a bit hazy, it’s hard to see much but the rough outline of what’s ahead of you. At times, it can feel like there is no clear direction of where the trail is headed. You get in your head as you try to recall what the trail looks like ahead of you - did I miss a trail marker?  What if I misstep and head in the wrong direction?

HR can feel this way too. While we create structure, policies and procedures that become our map for navigating business and the employee experience, you’ll quickly realize every scenario doesn’t perfectly fit into one policy or another. So you find yourself, wading through the fog considering all the ways you might ‘misstep’.

This is normal. Just like our outdoor adventures, you’ll map your route, stay true to the course as best as possible, and navigate over and around hurdles as necessary. Let your employment policies be your map. You’ll follow them and lean on them as you see fit, and get creative when the time comes to flex around those boundaries.

Just remember, every hike is unique and so will be many scenarios you face while wearing your HR hat. And if and when the time comes and you need support, a sounding board or someone to help clear the fog - ExpeditionHR can be your guide.
